Founders Bio:

(FDI) Forensic Digital Imaging, Inc. was founded by David Knoerlein “Digital Dave” a retired imaging systems manager with over 25 years of forensic photography experience.

The Justice Department Regime Crimes Liaisons Office, US Embassy, Baghdad, Iraq was tasked with gathering evidence from multiple mass graves. The challenge was to approach this as a crime scene rather than a traditional archeological site. This is how Mr. Knoerlein became involved. Working with the Iraqi High Tribunal and American legal advisors, Mr. Knoerlein customized SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and designed and managed a complete forensic digital imaging system to document evidence and human remains exhumed from mass graves throughout Iraq. The result; the images captured and processed were accepted and unchallenged as evidence used in the World Court International Tribunal trials against Saddam Hussein and his lieutenants for committing crimes against humanity.

Prior to his work in Iraq, Mr. Knoerlein worked as a Forensic Analyst for the Broward County Sheriff’s Office where he was in charge of the crime scene unit’s digital imaging section. While there, he qualified as an expert in digital imaging and testified in the (State of Florida vs. Victor Reyes) murder case. The Reyes case is one of only a few cases in the United States that have passed a Frye hearing challenging the use of digital imaging enhancement technologies.

•Testified as an expert in forensic photography/digital imaging in six criminal court trials and one Frye hearing.

Mr. Knoerlein began his law enforcement career with the Baltimore County Police Department as a forensic photographer for sixteen years. As a crime scene photographer and photo lab manager he was instrumental in converting the crime lab into a fully operational digital lab. The Standard Operational Procedures that he created in accordance with SWIGIT guidelines have been copied and used at many law enforcement agencies around the country.

•Testified as an expert in forensic photography in three criminal court trials.
